The role of scrubs in infection control

infection control

At Harveys Workwear, our priority has always been the safeguarding of your team members’ health and safety whilst wearing our scrubs in their daily roles. We ensure every single garment is fully equipped to medical-grade standards, particularly proving effective in infection control. We are proud to have been providing safety and comfort for all those who adorn our range of Healthcare scrubs, from right back to 1950!

Our scrubs are largely supplied to the care sector with appropriate, protective uniforms, including high-quality, medical-grade medical scrubs and uniforms.

Scrubs and infection control

For any public-facing medical profession, the role of infection control is pivotal. Without effective infection control, the NHS and other medical professions would come to an abrupt halt. Our scrubs are supplied to dentists, cosmetic industries, physiotherapists, beauticians and our NHS professions, to name a few. Our team  passionately feel that every person deserves the right to work without fear of any contamination. This is why our scrubs function as a protective barrier, to ensure infection control is totally effective.

Medical guidelines

General medical guidelines and advice explain how medical gowns should be washed in incredibly hot temperatures, to kill any bacteria and microorganisms that may harbour within them, therefore need to be made from sturdy, durable fabric. Other advice is that wearers should adorn short-sleeved shirts/blouses and avoid wearing long sleeves when providing care (as the cuff areas can become heavily contaminated).

Design and material

Infection control is also achieved by the design and material of the scrub itself. Both features help to reduce cross-contamination. The design of the scrub is a hugely thoughtful process, with infection control being central to all design decisions. The tight weave in each scrub limits the number of bacteria that can reach the scrub and the wearer underneath. If contaminants are trapped, they cannot be absorbed, which stops any infections from spreading.

Bacteria thrive and reproduce in additional features, such as pockets and folds. This is something we have been mindful of during our scrub design process. Cuffed sleeves and other features we have added also enable the wearer more freedom from potential contaminations.

These are some of the features that our extensive range of scrubs and scrub sets offer, to ensure comfort and safety of the wearers. Some of our current medical-based scrubs and scrub sets can be found by clicking the below links

Other factors in infection control: the fit of the scrub

In effective infection control, the scrub has to fit the wearer perfectly. This involves the scrub feeling ‘right,’ not being too tight or too loose. Especially within an infection-facing role, a loose-fitting scrub can be dangerous and lead to accidents or exposures.

Regular maintenance

Alongside the fit, design and material of the scrub uniform, regularly maintaining the scrub set is also significant when securing effective infection control. Regular cleaning, including thorough disinfection of the garments, hugely reduces any risk of contamination and spreading of infections.

Ensuring your scrubs and scrub sets are equipped for regular cleaning is essential. As we only use the best quality, robust materials, our scrubs and scrub sets are built for wear and tear and prove durable time after time. This ensures the safety and comfort of your team members, as well as saving you future replacement costs over time.
