Our Story: Harvey’s Heritage

Harveys Uniforms has been clothing the UK workforce since 1950 as part of the rich textile heritage of Oldham.

In the industrial revolution, Oldham transformed from a small rural hamlet to the textile processing capital of the world. Its first mill Lees Hall was built in 1778, and by 1928 there were over 360 mills, many of which still stand tall in Oldham today. At one point, over 30% of Oldham’s population worked in the textile industry, including leading member of the suffragette movement Annie Kenney! We’re really proud to have this incredible local history behind Harveys.

In the year we were founded, five years after World War II ended, the first Peanuts comic strip was published, The British Labour party won the 1950 general election, and Disney’s iconic Cinderella aired at our cinemas.

Harvey’s Uniforms was born out of a huge demand for workwear in the UK and beyond.

We were founded by Harvey Wild (grandfather of our current owner, who is also called Harvey Wild!). We clothed thousands of miners, factory workers, and construction workers as well as doctors, nurses and government employees, sourcing the fabric from UK suppliers and sewing it ourselves in our three factories.

When we first started, a large source of our business was from the NHS and the Ministry of Defence. These prestigious organisations had strict standards for uniform quality, so we paid great attention to the design, fabric, stitching and embroidery to ensure each uniform was perfectly made.

In the 1950s, jobs were very mucky and manual, so our focus was on making uniforms that were hardy and could withstand everyday wear and thorough washing. In the early 21st century jobs were getting cleaner and more office-based, so we adapted our techniques to specialise in professional office wear as well.

These qualities are what we’ve passed on through the generations of our family business to the customers we serve today. With decades of expertise behind us, we are always investing in new equipment and adapting our techniques to provide workwear that’s high quality, durable, and appropriate for various professions.

You can tell we’ve done well for our customers over the years, since we’re still clothing the next generation of NHS employees – but that’s a story for another time.
